Coin collectors dream: 10 uncommon penny varieties valued hundreds of dollars

Pennies, despite their small denomination, can sometimes be worth a fortune due to historical errors, unique designs, or limited mintages.  

The 1909-S VDB penny is one of the most famous and sought-after coins in American numismatics.  

Struck in San Francisco, this penny features the initials of designer Victor David Brenner on the reverse side.

Only 484,000 were minted, making it a rare find. Depending on its condition, a 1909-S VDB penny can fetch between $600 to $2,000 or more. 

During World War II, the U.S. Mint switched to zinc-coated steel pennies to conserve copper for the war effort.  

However, a few copper planchets were mistakenly used in 1943, resulting in a handful of genuine copper pennies from that year.  

The 1955 doubled die obverse penny is renowned for its prominent doubling of the date and lettering on the obverse side.
